The Hellenic Veterinary Association (H.V.A.) with his modern form and a regime of private law, was established in 1971 by a group of vets, who with the first chairman Ioannis Sotiropoulos at head, set the basis, so that today to be the free lance and salaried vets' unified syndicalism organization and the only corporate organ which can fortify their positions and their working conditions.

All the chairmen who staffed in turn the Administration Committees of the Association: Ioannis Sotiropoulos, Spyridon Kyriakis, Georgios Tsolakidis, Nikolaos Anthoulis, Ioannis Mademohoritis, Nikolaos Sotiropoulos, Georgios Georgiannakis, Theodoros Theodosiadis and Konstantinos Chandras, managed to create a dynamic and serious syndicalism organ, which apart from the difficulties (a small number of vets scattered all over Greece and because of that inability for a demanding pressure and of that inadequate legislation for defending the scientific - professional topics etc), set, promoted, claimed for and solved many of the already existent problems or the ones that were created during his years of action.

Athina Trachili, the first woman president of our association, has followed the resigned chairman Konstantinos Chandras since May 2005.

The first seat of the association was Mr. Anthoulis surgery, who was then the chairman, in Dorilaiou road. The increased needs led to the hiring of offices in Marnis road. Later, because of financial difficulties, it was put up in the private offices of the Hellenic Veterinary Company, in Piraios road. When it was permitted, the today's offices in 15 Chalkokondili were hired where there is a session room for the Administration Committee and a room for meetings, lectures and seminars.

The magazine of the Association also had such a progress. The need for informing made essential the publication of the H.V.A. NEWS, which for a long time was published like a small shaped magazine.
Later it took the form of a newspaper in order to result into the today's form known as "VETERINARY DOCUMENTATION". It is thought to be successful because of its presentation and its variety of topics. The Structural Committee of the Veterinary Company consists mainly of elected members of the Administration Committee. the progress of the Administration through the last 30 years is depicted on its official version. If somebody watches its development, he will discover the history of this Association, not only through the context but also through the form of the magazine.

• the creation of local branches.
• the Health Officials' Pensioning & Insurance Fund and the participation with a representative in its management
• the release of Presidential Decrees for the fortification of the professional rights.
• to consolidate a ministerial decision for the minimum wages of all the veterinary actions.
• the activation and the contribution to set up enactment in order to defend the science and also the interests of this field
• Recourse to Justice and people's conviction because of usurpation of this profession.
• the regular release of printed matters and the updating with News Releases, announcements etc.
• the website on the Internet.
• a valid and prompt presence in the Media and an official updating referring to topics, which are in our own domain, when these come up.
• the activation for the confrontation of stray animals (positions, proposals, presentation of the Presidential Decree)
• meetings, seminars, conferences (all over Greece and local) are organized
• the coming out of vaccination booklets for the pets.
• some colleagues' placement in the Public Sector (Ministry of Agriculture, Prefectural Authority)
• harmonization and operation of communal directions and rules
• the active participation and representation in committees, councils, (Sanitary Branch, Agricultural Politics Council)
• representation in International Organizations (FVE, UEVP, UEVH, Evaluation Committees of the Veterinary Medicine Schools, TAIEX program, Euro Arabian Veterinary Company).

To these and to other subjects as well, the Association is present with responsible and applicable proposals, promoting constantly the advantages of the branch, but simultaneously attending and defending Public Health.
However, there are undoubtedly important subjects for which the association's attempts didn't come to a result or are unsettled.
Today, 35 years after it's foundation, the H.V.A. continuous its efforts. All its members are obliged to understand that the Association needs rallying and their active participation in order to continue its route with bigger and stable steps, so that it becomes a true helper to the vets from all over the country and to gain a bigger capability to interfere in the social situation....
